Rearing Crayfish as pets.

They can be cared for like any fresh water tropical fish. Crayfish however prefer cooler water temperatures, so a water heater is not needed. If your constantly keep the temperatures high, they will mould very often and eventually shorten their lifespan.

Placing some small fish in the tank would be ideal as they can serve as food sources for your crayfish. As they hunt in both day and night, fishes will not thrive in the tank. Especially bottom feeders like clown loaches. Your crayfish will make short work out of them in no time….

Some gravel would be ideal and a sponge filter would be sufficient. Air stones are also recommended. This however depends on the size of tank that you have in mind. “Caves” are also recommended as they like a place to hide if they feel threatened.

Note that crayfish of every size will fight and its usually the bigger one that will emerge the victor. Unless you are into breeding them, I don’t suggest keeping more than 1 per tank. Unless you have a sufficiently large tank and with lots of hiding places for the smaller and weaker ones. Lost craws and legs will regenerate after a few moulds… that’s if they survive that long…
